At Art Forgly, we take pride in mastering the art of gold leafing—a meticulous and elegant process that adds a touch of timeless luxury to our handcrafted iron, aluminum, and copper creations. Gold leaf is not merely decorative; it’s the result of centuries-old craftsmanship where genuine gold is hammered and pressed into ultra-thin sheets, often available in various weights and shades. The most commonly used variant in our workshop is the 22-karat gold leaf, valued for its balance between purity, durability, and visual impact.
Gold leafing, also known as gilding, is considered one of the most intricate forms of surface decoration. It involves applying these delicate sheets by hand—without any machinery—onto iron or aluminum surfaces to produce a regal, radiant finish. This technique demands not only high-quality materials but also the hands of skilled artisans who understand the nuances of each layer and how gold interacts with the metal beneath.
The type of gold leaf used significantly affects the longevity and beauty of the final result. Among the popular varieties are French, Italian, and English gold leaf. In Egypt, French gold leaf is most widely used, as it offers exceptional quality at a relatively accessible price. It has a slightly reddish tone and a softer, matte glow compared to the bold brilliance of Italian gold or the intense yellow of the English leaf. While all types can produce stunning effects, the French variant remains the preferred choice for prestigious architectural elements.
Yet, the quality of the leaf is only part of the equation. The expertise of the artisan applying it is equally critical. Even the finest materials can fall short if applied without knowledge or care. That’s why Art Forgly invests in highly trained professionals who treat each project—whether a palace gate, a duplex staircase, or a balcony railing—as a unique canvas.
Gold leafing isn’t simply about shining surfaces; it’s about harmony with the overall design. Some clients prefer a polished, vivid gold finish, while others opt for a more aged or antique look—achieved through techniques such as patination or distressing.
Before the leafing process begins, the metal surface must be thoroughly cleaned and sanded to achieve a smooth finish. Once prepped, the gold leaf is applied gently and evenly, ensuring full coverage without any gaps or bubbles. Afterward, a sealing varnish is essential—not only to protect against environmental factors but also to prevent scratches, which are difficult to repair once the leaf is applied.
In our latest featured work at Art Forgly, we showcase a custom-forged piece finished with hand-applied gold leaf, followed by a protective isolation layer. We’ve also documented the process in two videos:
